Roadmap to a Culture of Quality Improvement Preview

Local health departments (LHDs) are immersed in a changing environment with the economic and political pressures, competing public health priorities, and new and emerging public health issues. The need to achieve efficiencies and other improvements with the limited resources available has magnified, increasing the importance of performance management, and specifically quality improvement (QI). Though QI has established a notable presence in the field, isolated QI processes are not sufficient when responding to budget cuts and competing public health priorities. A much more comprehensive approach is needed as LHDs work to transform organizational culture wherein the concepts of QI are ingrained in the shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices of all individuals in the agency. Moreover, successful attainment of accreditation status from the new Public Health Accreditation Board includes the embodiment of a QI culture.
